Disney's Fort Wilderness
Large families visiting Disney World is never a problem. There are several resorts to choose from but my favorite that sleeps 6 guests is the cabins at Fort Wilderness Campground. There is a variety of options to choose from whether you want to stay in a cabin, bring your RV or rough it up in a tent. If you want to enjoy the great outdoors and still be within a boat ride to Magic Kingdom this is the resort for you.
The cabins, which is considered a moderate, sleep 6 guests and have a full kitchen. There is a bedroom that has a full size bed and bunk bed’s. In the main living area there is a full size Murphy bed as well as a full living area. Outside of the cabin there is a nice deck with a full size grill as well as plenty of space in between cabins for the kids to play. Each cabin has a parking spot right outside. The cabins are rustic but have such a home away from home feeling.
There are 3 restaurants on property near the camping area. Trails End is a buffet and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hoop Dee Doo Musical Review is my all time favorite Disney meal. It is a dinner show and is suitable for all ages. They serve up buckets of all you can eat chicken and BBQ ribs as well as a green salad, baked beans and cornbread. For dessert they have a mouth watering strawberry shortcake. And for those of you who get thirsty during your meals, they serve up unlimited bear, wine and sangrias at no additional charge. Mickey’s Backyard BBQ is the last one on the list. It is also a dinner show Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Chip ‘n Dale are going to mingle with the guests. You will see cowboy rope tricks and dance to a live country band led by the Disney characters. It’s also all you can eat and features BBQ ribs, smoked chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob and mac n cheese. They serve lemonade, fruit punch, soft drinks and complimentary beer and wine for guests over 21.
Since this resort is homier, you can find plenty of household items at the Trading Post. Also, transportation to the parks is included in your stay. They have a nice beach are on Bay Lake that you can view fireworks and a nightly water parade. As far as recreation, Fort Wilderness has pools, boat rentals, kayak rentals, waterskiing, bike rentals, golf cart rentals, canoe rentals, an archery experience, pony rides, holiday sleigh rides, wagon rides, a ranch, campfire sing along and marshmallow roast, movies under the stars, jogging trails, fishing, basketball courts, volleyball and arcades. You will not be disappointed in the amenities here.
My favorite time to visit Fort Wilderness is around the holidays. Guests go all out decorating their RV’s, campsites and cabins for the 4th of July, Halloween and Christmas holidays. Holiday sleigh rides are available late November through the end of December. There is also a Christmas gold cart parade every year on December 24th. Guests deck their carts out with lights, garland and decorations and ride through the campground showing off their hard work. It is a lot of fun and a must if you are visiting that time of year.
