Why Travel?

The world is big... Go see it
I grew up and still live in a small town in South Louisiana. Life is great here and pretty much always has been. As most small southern towns are, their is a great since of community and family. For the most part of my life I have traveled the same four roads to get to where ever I was going. All of my family and friends are here and this is where we will raise our children and they will most likely do the same. This is the place that holds most of my childhood memories and the community that molded me. This is home. This town has been able to fulfill most all of everything I have ever wanted and for that I am grateful. However since I was a child I have always been intrigued by the thought of how life is lived in other places. South Louisiana is an area booming with culture. So much in fact that our cultures defines us. Each small town down here each possesses each its own unique culture that fuels our identities, daily lives, and pride. To say that culture is important to me would be nothing short of an understatement. But that very notion has always grabbed a hold of me from such a young age. I would often sit and wonder what life would be like in New York or California and how much of a different person I would be if I were from a different city. Would I even have the same interests? I would even pick what sports teams I would root for based off of what cities I thought would be cool to live in. I was the kid who wanted to go away for college but when it came time to take flight I chose to stay grounded. This place was all I had ever known and I wasn’t sure how cut out I was for the rest of the world. I wasn’t really what you would call a risk taker but the idea of being from somewhere else would never escape me. It wouldn’t be until I met my wife that I would decide to look past these same four walls and really see what this world had to offer me. Each place we would travel to would just make me want to see another. Seeing different cultures was so fascinating to me. Even the simplest differences in food or terminology interests me. When I go on a vacation I’m not looking for the tourist traps. I am really not seeing the worlds largest ball of yarn of a six storied mini golf course. When I travel, I want to see famous land marks and beautiful country side. I want to see the amazing things we have been able to create as well as the things that only God could. I want to see how the people live. I want to see culture. It is the thing that probably fascinates me most in this world. I have seen the beaches, mountains, and plains. I have seen the New York City skyline as well as the sunsets in Hawaii and they have all left me wanting to see the next great thing. [bctt tweet=”This world is far too big and life is too short to stay in just one place. Go see it…@NickPoche”]This is also something that I want to share with my children. Yes I want to take them on fun family vacations and we do. But I also want to show them the world and all it has to offer. This past summer we were able to take them with us to New York City. It was amazing to show them a place that is NOTHING like home. We were able to take them to the 9/11 Museum to see first hand something they would have ever only seen in history books. I was able to explain to them significance of this horrific event in our nations history by showing them accounts of the events that they would never find in books. It is a trip that I think they will always remember even more than some of the fun trips. I want them to know what the world can be like first hand. And as much as I want them to stay right here with me, I want them to know that their is much life beyond this town. This world is far too big and life is too short to stay in just one place. Go see it…
